About University
The Deccan College was established on 6 Oct 1821 in Pune, Maharashtra, India as Hindoo College, it is one of the oldest institutions of modern learning. It is the PG & Research college also related to the Deccan institute of Archaeology, Linguistics & Sanskrit, and Lexicography. It is the 3rd oldest Educational Institute in India. The Hindoo College was inaugurated by the Bombay Presidency Govt. at the initiative of its Governor, Mountstuart Elphinstone by doing the Dakshina Fund, which was started by Khanderao Dabhade, a Maratha Sardar & continued by the Peshwas for propagating Sanskrit studies.
The College was locked down by the British Government in 1934, but because of the efforts of the past students & the public-spirited citizens, it was reopened on 17th Aug1939 as Deccan College, Post-Graduate & Research Institute, by the Transfer deed issued by the Hon’ble Bombay High Court. The Past Students Association is growing in strength & actively participates in the construction of the University. The college started functioning on the new campus on 23 Mar 1868. At this stage, it was also called Deccan College in recognition of the enrollment of students from the whole Deccan region.
